Literacy Inequality In Ghana
The issue of literacy inequality in Ghana has deeply impacted us. The national average literacy rate stands at a mere 58%, where more than 4 out of every 10 Ghanaians cannot read in any language. What has been even more troubling to discover is that only 7% of 9-year-olds in Ghana have acquired foundational reading skills, a problem that is heightened in the gender divide. This alarming statistic highlights a national crisis partly fuelled by limited school access for many children.
Another critical factor contributing to this crisis is the shortage of adequately trained teachers.
According to the Ghana Ministry of Education Reform in 2018, ‘22% of primary school teachers in government schools, and 70% of primary school teachers in private schools in Ghana are not licensed.’ There are many causes for this, including teachers lacking finances for tuition fees for professional teacher training and development courses. As a result, teachers are left with outdated teaching practices and cannot progress children’s education.
Our Partnership With OneSeed: Long-Term Teacher Training In Ghana
Investing in education has been critical as part of our company’s core values to empower people through language. To support our values, we’re partnering with OneSeed to sponsor long-term teacher training in Ghana.
OneSeed’s Director of Programs and Partnerships, Emmanuel Hagan, says ‘education plays a major role in national development. It’s one of the greatest pillars.’ By providing access to quality education, children in Ghana can become critical thinkers and future leaders who shape the world.
Over the past year, OneSeed has diligently developed teacher training programmes in Ghana to give teachers the confidence to empower their students. OneSeed’s Long-Term Teacher Training Program has a clear goal: to provide teachers access to professional training that enables them to create positive learning environments for all students across Ghana.
The programme takes teachers through intensive training to teach basic phonics skills and provide solutions and learning aids for struggling students. This training programme has been remarkably successful, with basic reading skills rising from 49% to 71%. The students of Ghana have continued to make significant progress with OneSeed’s Long-Term Teacher Training Programme.
