Is Threads Worth It For Small Businesses in 2026?

Published: June 15th, 2026 and written by

When a new social media platform explodes onto the scene, the pressure for small businesses to jump on board is immense.

We saw it with Clubhouse (remember that blast from the past?!), and we’re seeing it again with Threads.

The promise of a fresh audience and the fear of being left behind can create a powerful sense of urgency, particularly for small businesses offering content strategy services or other digital marketing professionals.

The initial hype surrounding Threads was deafening, with millions of users signing up overnight. It felt like the new frontier of digital marketing, a text-based renaissance for those of us weary of the endless demand for video.

As it often does, reality has proven far more complex. I’ve been in the trenches, experimenting with Threads for my own content agency business and observing how others are faring. What I’ve found is a strange and often contradictory landscape.

Follower counts ballooned almost instantly after launch, but the engagement since has felt hollow. Visibility seemed high, yet the audience’s silence was palpable. Perhaps I’m just unfairly comparing Threads to the heyday of Twitter, but then again, isn’t that what Threads wants to be?

It’s a platform of paradoxes, one that requires a deeper, more strategic look before you invest your most precious resource: your time. So, let’s pull back the curtain and have an honest conversation about whether Threads is truly worth it for your small business.

The Engagement Paradox: Why Follower Count is a Vanity Metric

The Engagement Paradox: Why Follower Count is a Vanity MetricThanks to its easy integration with Instagram, you can import your existing followers with a single tap. I saw my own follower count jump into the thousands overnight, a feat that took years to achieve on other platforms.

But this is where the Threads experience gets particularly weird… That big, shiny follower number doesn’t mean the same thing as on other platforms.

The Strange Case of the Silent Followers

The most intoxicating feature of Threads for any small business is the promise of instant audience growth. All those Instagram followers who migrated are going to be active here, too, right?

This is where the paradox begins. While the numbers on your profile look impressive, the actual engagement on your posts can be strangely low. This isn’t a unique experience; it’s a common frustration I’m hearing from business owners across the board.

The reason for this disconnect is simple. Many users, in their rush to join the new platform, simply clicked “follow all” without a second thought. As of January 2026, market research platform Resourcera reports 450 million monthly active users and 137 million daily active users on Threads.

This means you have a large number of passive followers who may not even be active on the app more than once a month, let alone interested in your content.

This creates a situation where you have high visibility but low engagement. Your posts might be seen by a lot of people, but the likes, comments, and shares are few and far between. It’s a classic case of a vanity metric, a number that looks good on the surface but doesn’t translate to meaningful business results.

The situation has many considering is Threads worth it for small businesses, who may not have the extra time to parse the real meaning behind their performance metrics.

Good Visibility, But Is Anyone Really Listening?

The flip side of the low engagement coin is the surprisingly good visibility.

Because Threads is still a relatively new platform, the algorithm is more generous with organic reach. This means your posts have a higher chance of being seen by a broader audience, even if they don’t actively engage with your content.

This presents a unique opportunity for brand awareness. While you may not be getting a flood of likes and comments, you are getting your name and your message in front of a lot of eyeballs.

The key is to understand that this visibility is a long-term play. It’s about planting seeds and building brand recognition over time. It’s not about getting instant gratification in the form of likes and shares. It’s about consistently showing up, providing value, and trusting that your message is resonating with the right people, even if they’re not making a lot of noise about it.

Small Businesses to Watch: Who is Making Threads Work?

Small Businesses to Watch: Who is Making Threads Work?Despite the challenges, some small businesses in the digital marketing space are carving out a niche for themselves on Threads. Here are a few that I’ve been watching closely:

Amber Figlow (@amberfiglow)

Amber is a content strategist who has leaned into the visual side of Threads.

While Threads a text-based platform, she uses carousels and images to share her expertise on Canva and social media strategy. Her content is a great example of how to provide value in a visually engaging way, even on a platform that prioritises text.

In addition to pictures, she creates mini-tutorials and quick tips within her carousels. It makes her content beautiful and incredibly useful. This approach has helped her stand out in a sea of text-based posts and attract a highly engaged audience of fellow creators and small business owners.

Rachael Mueller (@hey.rachael)

Rachael’s content is a masterclass in finding a niche. She focuses on productivity and automation, sharing a weekly “Automation of the Week” series.

This consistent, valuable content has helped her build a loyal following of people who are genuinely interested in what she has to say. Her posts are not just about the ‘what’ of automation, but the ‘why’ and ‘how’.

She breaks down complex automation concepts into simple, actionable steps that her audience can implement in their own businesses. This focus on practical value is a key reason for her success on the platform.

Lennox Saint (@lennox_saint)

Lennox is all in on Threads. He’s the founder of Saints College, a community dedicated to helping creators grow on the platform.

His content is a mix of inspirational posts and practical advice, all geared towards helping his audience succeed on Threads. He’s a great example of how to build a community around a specific platform. He hosts regular Q&A sessions, shares case studies of successful Threads creators, and actively engages with his followers in the comments.

These creators are not just posting and praying. They are experimenting, engaging, and providing value. They are proof that it is possible to build a meaningful presence on Threads, but it requires a thoughtful and strategic approach.

The Upside of Threads for Small Businesses

The Upside of Threads for Small BusinessesDespite the engagement paradox, there are compelling reasons why a small business might still consider investing time in Threads. When approached with the right strategy, the platform offers unique advantages.

A Direct Line to Your Instagram Audience

The most significant advantage is the built-in connection to your existing Instagram community. You’re not starting from zero. This provides an immediate potential audience and a new channel to nurture relationships with people who have already shown an interest in your brand.

A Space for Authentic, Unpolished Content

Threads offers a refreshing departure from Instagram’s highly curated, visually demanding world. The platform’s text-first nature encourages more spontaneous and authentic conversations.

It’s a place where you can share behind-the-scenes thoughts, ask questions, and engage in real-time discussions without the pressure of creating a perfect image or video.

Early Adopter Advantage and Visibility

As with any new platform, there’s an early adopter advantage. The algorithm is currently more generous, offering greater organic reach than more mature platforms. This means your content is more likely to be seen by a broader audience, even if direct engagement is low.

This visibility can be valuable for brand awareness and establishing your presence before the platform becomes more saturated.

A Low-Stakes Environment for Experimentation

Because the content is less permanent and the expectations are lower, Threads is an excellent place to experiment with different messaging and content ideas. You can test out new angles, gauge audience reactions to different topics, and refine your brand voice in a low-stakes environment. The insights you gain can then be applied to your broader content strategy on other platforms.

The Downside of Threads for Small Businesses

Of course, it’s not all sunshine and organic reach.

The platform is still in its infancy, and there are significant drawbacks that every small business owner needs to consider before diving in headfirst. What look like minor inconveniences at first glance can impact your time and resources.

Another Mouth to Feed in Your Content Ecosystem

The most immediate challenge is that Threads is yet another platform to manage. Even though the content is text-based, it still requires time and effort to create meaningful posts and engage with your audience. For a small business with limited resources, adding another channel to the mix can stretch your marketing team thin.

A Frustrating Lack of Essential Features

Threads still lacks many of the basic features marketers rely on. There are no scheduling tools, which makes it difficult to plan and execute a consistent content strategy. The lack of a robust analytics dashboard means you’re flying blind, unable to track your performance or understand what’s resonating with your audience.

Furthermore, the absence of hashtags makes it challenging to expand your reach beyond your existing followers. Plus, the inability to send or receive direct messages means you can’t have private conversations with customers, which is a critical component of customer service for many businesses.

The Engagement Might Never Come

It’s easy to get caught up in the visibility Threads offers, but visibility doesn’t always equal the right kind of engagement. The platform has settled into its groove, proving to be a great space for reaching a highly conversational, specific audience.

You have to ask yourself: is this audience actually your target market? If your ideal customers aren’t the ones spending their time debating and chatting on text-focused apps, your brand might just be talking to an empty room.

The Inability to Truly Separate from Instagram

Finally, the fact that you can’t delete your Threads account without also deleting your Instagram account is a significant concern. This lack of independence means you’re tethered to the Instagram ecosystem, whether you like it or not. It’s a level of commitment that many small businesses may not be comfortable with.

From Vanity Metrics to Valuable Conversations

So, is Threads worth it for your small business? The honest answer is: it depends. It’s not a simple yes-or-no. It’s a strategic decision that requires a clear understanding of your goals and resources.

If you’re looking for a new channel to drive direct sales or generate a flood of leads, Threads is probably not the right fit for you right now. The lack of features and the passive nature of the audience make it a challenging environment for conversion-focused marketing.

However, if you’re looking for a place to build community, experiment with your brand voice, and increase your visibility, Threads offers a unique and valuable opportunity. It’s a platform that rewards authenticity and consistency, and it can be a powerful tool for building relationships with your audience.

My advice is to approach Threads with a healthy dose of scepticism and a clear content strategy. Don’t get seduced by the vanity metrics of a high follower count.

Instead, focus on creating valuable content, engaging in meaningful conversations, and building a community of people who are genuinely interested in what you have to say.

Frequently Asked Questions

It’s not necessarily better, just different. Threads offers a built-in audience from Instagram, which can be a huge advantage. However, Twitter has more robust features for marketers, including hashtags and analytics. The best platform for you will depend on your specific goals and target audience.

Consistency is more important than frequency. Aim for a posting schedule that you can realistically maintain. It’s better to post one high-quality piece of content per day than to post five low-quality posts. Experiment with different posting times to see what works best for your audience.

Authentic, text-based content tends to perform best. Think behind-the-scenes insights, personal stories, and conversation starters. While you can post images and videos, the platform is designed for text, so make sure your written content is strong.

Not yet. Threads does not currently have an advertising platform. This may change in the future, but for now, the focus is on organic content and community building.

Focus on starting conversations. Ask questions, share your opinions, and respond to comments on your posts. The more you engage with your audience, the more they will engage with you. Also, don’t be afraid to show your personality and have some fun with your content.
